Silent Movie Night: ‘Beggars Of Life’

Accompaniment From The Dodge Brothers Featuring Mark Kermode And Neil Brand

7:30pm, Wednesday, March 4th, 2020
St Mary in the Castle

Renowned film critic Kermode joins his bandmates and acclaimed composer Brand for a musical accompaniment to ‘Beggars of Life’.

Live music and cinematic landscapes come together when The Dodge Brothers – Mike Hammond, Mark Kermode, Aly Hirji and Alex Hammond  join forces with premiere silent film pianist Neil Brand to perform their rousing score for William’s Wellman’s rail-riding rollercoaster Beggars of Life.

Renowned film critic Kermode – who plays bass and harmonica – will be joining his bandmates and acclaimed composer Brand for a musical accompaniment to Beggars of Life: the seminal 1928 American movie featuring Wallace Beery as a rail-riding hobo and Louise Brooks as a girl on the run.

Doors 7pm
Start 7.30pm

Tickets £22.50 (balcony), £27.50 (stalls), £37.50 (boxes to include VIP drink with the Dodge Brothers after the film)

The performance has been met with glowing reviews following London shows, and the band became the first ever to accompany a silent film at Glastonbury Festival in 2014.

Renowned for ‘playing the hell out of classic Americana’, the quartet play an exuberant hybrid of country blues, rockabilly, jugband and skiffle. While Alabama-born lead guitarist and vocalist Mike Hammond lends the music an authentic American twang, Culture Show presenter and Observer lead film critic Mark Kermode brings a strong British perspective to proceedings – getting feet stomping and hands clapping from California to Cropredy, from the Mississippi to the New Forest.
